I have made a CS 1.6 rates guide on my website which is worth a look if your interested.
I go into detail about each setting on what the best setting is and why, but if its TLDR I have just put the best settings you can use at the bottom of the page.
If you find it useful please click one of the adsense ads and I will get 1p!
Any questions either put a comment on my site or reply to this thead.

The correct setting is always 10 divided by your updaterate, so if your updaterate is set to 100, the best setting is 0.01
1/updaterate,
ex_interp / (interp not used) explained:

That maxrate info was something new though, how do you know?

some good stuff on there craig but there is also a lot of generalistation here, you say
Quoted........
Now with 101 you still get red dots, in fact the best cmdrate to use is 105. And I have used this all along.
this is bs you cannot generalise peoples connections or if you do you have to make it clear that is a generalisation as for me 101 gives me no red dots.
Don't get me wrong there is a lot of good info there but there is also a lot of misleading information

I can't believe people still have to limit their game rates to their connections.
cmdrate = fps_max + 5
updaterate = server max
maxrate = server max
ex_interp 0

there should be a command / commands to change updaterate automatically so it matches the server

you only get a few, but still some. try staying on a server for +30minutes then checking net graph again, i dont know why but the longer you are on the server the more frequent red dots become. and every red dot is a command not sent because your cmd rate cap stopped it, if your on a server for about 2+ hours even 105 is not enough.
i will add this to the guide, thanks.

to add:
cl_smoothtime 0
ripped-
Quoted........
cl_smoothtime
Valve write that "Corrections of prediction errors can be quite noticeable and will cause your view to jump a bit. To visually smooth that effect, the prediction error is corrected gradually over a short amount of time ( cl_smoothtime )."
Personally, I would set this to 0. In the case that we dont actually recieve all the packets/commands from the server in the case a lag spike, a bad server, etc we want to see the interpolation of the ACTUAL packets recieved. Therefore, if we set cl_smoothtime to 0, our interpolation wont be 'smoothed' or corrected and we will see the actual position of the players. Note that this will cause a jump in the players movements, but they will be correct.
I didnt add smoothtime as I haven't had a chance to test it, and that info is from source not 1.6, but im sure it does the same thing, just 1.6 has even more commands to do with smoothing such as cl_nosmooth and cl_vsmoothing but I will add it when I get time to test them.

Wow source has shit graphics
yeah source does have shit graphics LoL! oh just look at the bottom of that website, what does it say?
Quoted........
*Note* Valves document on source was only used for cl_smoothtime, which still does the same thing in 1.6. ALL other information is still correct to 1.6.

Valves document on source

Np mate, I agree it also depends on the server aswell for example the UKCT DM server I get the odd red dot where as on most priv/war servers I get nothing even international servers regardless of how long I play, I use 20k 101 101 if I drop my cmd below 100 I automatically get red dots

yeah im a rates n3rd and found the guide useful, thanks :] This seems to be info you've accumulated over the years from different sources, and some of it is just psychological, so I take alot of the advice with a pinch of salt - no-one will really ever understand netcode and determine the best settings imo
the thing with interp, I had interp set at 0 for years, always did OK, always had problems...nowadays i set my interp to match the ping on the server, e.g for a ping of 20MS, i would use ex_interp 0.02...and i literally cant remember the last time i complained about reg, it smoothes out my netgraph completely - I would recommend trying it out, if only for a bit.
It could be psychological, but I find unless you're playing on LAN, interp 0 doesnt do anything for me

should fps_max be 100 or 101?
and do fps_modem and rate commands have any effect?
