SGLPro Series : SGLPro 1 preview

Posted by sgl Uzi on 7th Apr 2008 @ 11:37pm

Welcome to the latest 1.6 event to hit theSGL !  This event as pointed out many times previously, is a pay to play event, where by everyone who is in the event has paid for the right to play in the event.  The season shall be played over seven weeks and four different maps.  The maps will be: de_inferno, de_nuke, de_train, de_dust2.  You will notice straight away that these maps are all common ones in the CS scene, and the main reason behind doing so is so that we see a nice number of different tactics on the maps we all know and love.

There will be two leagues now after it was decided that demand was so big for this event that sixteen teams should be playing for cash.  The two divisions will be named SGLPro 1 and SGLPro 2.  Both divisions should be raising a minimum of £400, depending on the number of players signed up to this event, the minimum amount is determined by 5 players for each team. The prize pot will be split between first and second place 75%/25%, so that means an extra minimum prize pot of £300 for 1st place! An extra £100 is going to be added to SGLPro1 for even more excitement!

Everyone playing in this event will want the money and as a result rules are being strictly enforced. Russian walking will be the most important thing to stop doing, as every instance of this from the moment the match starts will lose you the round by default. Every round lost = a round closer to losing the match, so don’t do it!

SGLAC is enforced and this will be shown on the SGL servers where you will be kicked from the server for not using the AC. Admins should be checking before they live the game, but it will not be their fault if you haven’t used it and get kicked after the match has gone live. If you are found to have not been using AC (and for some bizarre twist of fate not automatically removed from the server), or one of the players in your team then you will lose that match by default. That will put a real blow into your title ambitions and will piss off your clanmates, so make sure you use it.

Mercing is also banned, and this will be enforced through IP checks, and hardware scan’s on every player. If for any reason you need to change your hardware (cpu/mobo/hd/gfx) or reformat your machine - you must tell SGL Admins who will then make sure it is noted and will make sure that you aren’t then removed from the competition for mercing. Rosters will be locked from the start of this event. The AC will do hardware scans, although I haven’t been told how and I’m sure I won’t be told either.

Please remember its not just where you finish in the league come the end of the season, as there will be playoffs afterwards to really determine whether you deserve to take the money or not! These playoffs will operate in exactly the same fashion to the invite for Season Eight, so the top 4 will slug it out for the title!

Many of you will never have heard of me, and that’s for good reason, I keep myself to CZ, but I have been asked to do the news writing for this event. While my knowledge of the CS team isn’t great, thanks to clan websites and all the resources there are available on the net I have compiled quite a bit of data on the clans involved in this competition. I hope this shows through my writing, but if something is wrong, give us a shout, so I can sort it out.  If I haven’t got a lot to say about you its because you either haven’t updated your site link, got a website or your website is seriously outdated!

So now we’ve had a big run down of the event to be played, why not take a look at the teams?

This team is a rather large professional gaming organisation with teams in many different games. Having won the SGL Season Seven Invite league they went into the last season with a lot expected of them. Despite this they failed to make a huge impact, and after the last game of the season failed to get into the play off for the league and as a result finished fifth. This will be an obvious disappointment for them and they will be looking to come back strong for this event. In other leagues they are currently competing in they ain’t doing half bad recording wins against clip and Highfive, both in a best of 3 maps situation where they had finished by the end of the second map, these matches led to a semi final play off between themselves and Strong, who will be their biggest competitors for this event. Team Coolermaster took the victory away from strong over 2 maps, which sort of gives them the favourites tag for this event.

Taking the Skilltracker stats from Season 8, their best player would be talz who sits in 13th place at time of writing. That’s 2185 points on average over 6 games. Their worst player being solutionX who managed 1038 average over 2 games and as a result sits 131st in the stats. The rest of the players on their SGL roster are sitting in the mid table skilltracker table with 30/40 positions.

I would rate these guys as one of 2 teams that are likely to take the money this season.

This team is the only Icelandic team in the event, and will be looking to do their nation proud by beating as many teams from the UK as possible. They are currently considered as one of the best teams in Iceland at the current time, having been around for 2 and a half years. Still can anyone name any amazing teams from Iceland? Lets hope these guys are the first to be fluently pronounced by the end of the season. They’ve not actually competed in SGL yet, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t performed at all.

In the past year they have competed in LAN Events where they finished second in both events. They however managed to get the attention of http://kisildalur.is/ who are a big computer company over in Iceland, who are now sponsoring them. Their line up consists of 2 players who have been with them since the beginning of time for them, and the rest they have picked up over time. Some have even been dubbed as the best aimers in Iceland, so lets see just how good that aim is compared to that of the guys from the UK.

Engine on Mute are back once again in to the fray. There is no disputing the fact that they are a talented group of players but they do suffer from what could perhaps be described as a lack of stamina or staying power. With this being a pay to play event the guys will hopefully want to extract their moneys worth from the season and despite what some may think - a stable and active Engine On Mute team is a good thing for the UK one point six scene.

Over coming weeks you will be able to marvel once again as the AWP of Robulus lays down some heavy ownage and you will also be able to leave plenty of comments informing Dancem that "1.6 is dead".  Coming into the event with no recent form and nothing to base any predictions on their final position will probably depend on their commitment to pcw's through out the rest of the week - it can be a big ask to bring back a team from total inactivity and ask them to play a heavy schedule of training and a pressure match each week.

Engine on mute could easily be the surprise package of the event but will have to hit the ground running as there may not be a great deal of time for them to get back into their groove. (uzi)

These are one set of lads I actually know something about, as they have competed in SGLCZ for the last two seasons. They have done quite well over there too…

Having won the invite group for SGL Eight, they went and lost in the playoffs to immolate in a very close encounter over three maps. This will be quite disappointing for them, as they would really have liked to take it all the way, as any clan would have, but these lads more so being the favourites to take that tie. With this all in mind, Strong (now CZar) are likely to be the strongest team going into this event, and possibly the most likely to win. With money involved, I’m sure it will spark a fire within their hearts to really go out for a win in every game they play.

In the ED Resurrection cup they got to the semi finals before losing to main rivals in this event team coolermaster. To get that far they had to ease past Urban Vikingz, Ordeal and Flavour.

Their roster is quite big, which might be a downside to them in the way of costs if they want to compete and also getting used to the style of play for all their members. Still I’m sure they will find a solid five for this tournament and the players will game with each other solidly to take the cash. From watching a few of their games I have seen that they can play the basic maps with good tactics, but their weakest map seems to be nuke. Maybe this is something to be aware of when planning tactics against them.

For stats from last season we see their best player as PeteL who sits in 12th place on the stats with 2189 points from 6 games. Their worst player was Spk who was in 84th with 1607 points from 4 games. I would place Strong alongside Team Coolermaster when it comes down to who wins this event.

Season Seven Championship play off winners, and runners up of Season Eight Premiership playoffs, showing these  lads can’t be that bad, considering they only just got into this division and were instantly challenging for the title.

Taking a look round for these lads in other leagues was something difficult, but I did find them eventually in the first round of the ED resurrection cup, where Flattering to Deceive knocked them out at the first stage of the knockouts. That leaves me with only their Premiership games in Season eight to judge them by. The playoffs saw them take on MEYEX.co.uk where they won over 3 maps, 2-1. They then went onto play Flattering to Deceive for the second time in recent months, losing to them for a second time where they went down 2-1 on maps.

According to the stats LovinDZ was their best player last season picking up 2184 points from 7 games and as a result sitting in 14th place. Trepkkos was not far behind him with 2160 points from 7 games, which meant he was placed 18th. Their worst player was yon all the way down in 117th with 1282points from 2  games. He’ll need to pick up his game if they want to win this event!

A newly formed clan, so theres not a lot about them around on the net. As a result I’ve had to go by site history of each of the players alone.

All the lads in this clan have come from well respected decent clans within CS. The clan leader being Blacky who used to play for Strong, will be highly influential in the ruling of this squad. He is joined by fellow ex-strong players Dajo and Spanky. With those 3 players alone this squad is already quite formidable, but you can’t expect to win games without 5.

BRANDON recently left team acuity to join these lads, so these lads can’t be that bad otherwise he would of stayed with them. PassioN left team coolermaster recently aswell as @lantis from lost resort.

It makes the line-up quite strong (no pun intended), and defiantly capable of challenging for the title. I have a feeling these lads will only be together for this event, but I may be wrong.

Before the playoffs got under way these lads managed a joint second finished, with round difference meaning they got into second place. When they went into the playoffs though they were knocked out at the first hurdle, where they lost to immolate in a battle that lasted over 3 maps. Atleast they had a go at it and failed, where as some clans would have just been steam rolled over.

They have recently made a new addition to their team in the form of onscreen, who is bound to help their chances slightly.  Even without him they stand a good chance with some quality players in their lineup.

The best player according to the stats, in inyourmind was vacman` who managed 2286 from the 1 game he played, while on the opposite end Caoldasic was the worst with 1689 points from 6. He ended up 70th.

Round up
This league could go anywhere, but I feel the top 2 will be CZAR and Team Coolermaster. These 2 teams have shown their quality in the past, and are still currently playing pretty good. The battle between these 2 teams will be the biggest to see in my opinion, but if other teams can get their tactics sorted, then it will make it difficult.

With so much money involved its bound to make them all play much better, but which clans are going to do it is the question?  Catalyst wanting to make an impact in the UK, would be nice to see, with eom needing a return to their glory days. Inyourmind will want to make up for a disappointment in the playoffs, as will CZAR. Team acuity straight out of the Premiership will also be looking to actually start getting noticed for the future, so who knows what will happen. The only place to find out is here!
