CS1.6 : Cartography - week one

  Opening night for the teams involved here in the Cartography series which of course features the most ancient of maps brought back from the mists of time for your gaming consideration.

Of the three events kicking off tonight this was the one that gained the most applications no doubt due to players who remember when these maps were the staple diet of competition play. Tonight we kick things off with one of my favourite all time maps - prodigy.

What do we know about prodigy then? The first thing that springs to mind is that if you are going to win this map you must shut out every terrorist round and lock things down. An average side using good tactical discipline can easily hold of a higher skilled team for long periods here - I know because I have done it. Lots of times.

The key is of course the two choke points. At the top end of the map you have the exit from the APC area which can be covered from multiple raised positions protected from teh effects of flashbangs and with great wallbanging spots (Terrorists have to stay away from teh vending machine area or they deserve all they get). If the CT's in this area (generally two are enough) have any clue what they are doing they should taken down the bulk of any attack coming their way. If they don't then they are simply not up to the job.

At the other end of the map things aren't so clear cut as there is always the chance the T awper is going to be good enough to step out and take down the defending awper before he gets his shot off. This alone is the only time on this maps early stage where actual skill is an issue. Assuming the T team gets in here then they should be blown to bits by a wave of grenade coming from the CT spawn area and even if they elect to go up the stairs they should fall prey to the "spare man" ready to back up either way in this case waiting to pop some heads of some very low HP players as they hit the staircase.

One the CT's have a full complement of guns armour and grenades there is no reason except a lack of simple tactics why they shouldnt shut out the T side entirely.

For their part the terrorists have to make early gains and more than ever the pistol round is vital. we all know the pistol round is as good as a 3-0 start and three rounds are hard to come by on this map. That could be all that separates the teams by the end.

Finally a reminder about the way we approach the first night of any new league series event here on theSGL. For the first week only - any player that is added to your roster before your first match is eligible to play. Time remaining is not an issue. For subsequent weeks the standard rules are in force as usual.

Contact your opponent with or for server details and do nto forget to run SGLac. If you do not run it you will end up defaulting your match and getting all annoyed about it afterwards - easier to just do it really.

Boozeplatoon : my god we used to totally own everyone on this map. It's a great leveller wher team skills may be imbalanced , a bit like a pub team playing MAN U , you'll do better on a ploughed field than a nice flat grassy pitch - cos youll both be limited by the options you actually have.
