The curtain raises on the last of the three new league series here on theSGL as we invite you to Pimp My Map. You will be pleased to hear I'm going to refrain from any "pimp" related puns and try and stick to the cs wherever possible.
Week one : de_tuscan. It's a map name that more peoples are probably familiar with than the actual number of players who have come into actual in game contact with it. So what's it all about?
Tuscan in short is cpl_mill. It's not "like mill" - it IS mill. Given that mill is one of the finest maps ever created and you're not allowed to use it due to usage restrictions imposed by the cpl upon their North American competitors what do you do ? You make your own version which is an exact replica - then you change a few bits here and there to make sure it is regarded as being a new map in it's own right that you are then free to use.
One thing that will be in evidence tonight will be the rush up the central ramp and the right turn to head over to the upper bomb site. The main problem with this is when the Terrorist team turn right they will run into a brick wall - not as you might expect a brick wall of sold CT resistance - but an actual brick wall blocking the way. You can scoot round through the house but with a narrow entry and easily defendable postiion it's a dangerous option leaving you with little choice but to attack left from the ramp towards the unchanged "kitty ramp" area or to push forwards and surge through the bottom of CT spawn. From the other end of the map - gone is SA2 to be replaced with a dusty urban corridor of houses, a bit more open plan but amounting to the same basic idea.
You're not going to go too far wrong by creating a map so similar to one of the all time classics so it's hard to pick any real faults with it but when greeted by a map that's not something you have played before and is so very similar to map you know and understand it can be frustrating exercise.
Finally a reminder about the way we approach the first night of any new league series event here on theSGL. For the first week only - any player that is added to your roster before your first match is eligible to play. Time remaining is not an issue. For subsequent weeks the standard rules are in force as usual.
Contact your opponent with or for server details and do nto forget to run SGLac. If you do not run it you will end up defaulting your match and getting all annoyed about it afterwards - easier to just do it really.
All queries via irc #theSGL to either Nic or Blizzard please.
