Pimp My Map - Week three

Ah, de_sgl_stone. The once hated, now suddenly held up in high regard, SGL sponsored map. Personally I was always a fan. Honest.

A recent topic on the subject of custom maps on the SGL forums inevitably bought up discussion of sgl_stone. Now, when this was played last in the league it bought out teeth grinding and the furrowed brows of individuals attempting to create some decent strategy around the map. It was either hated or loved, with the majority of people of people in the former group. Fast forward to Online Heroes #18 on said map and suddenly everyone’s memories take on a distinct tone of rose and everyone starts remembering how much they loved it.

Seriously though, when I first played stone in the league format, I hated it. I disliked its horrible boosts and box textures. The window route seemed overly weighted towards the terrorists and the chimney boost seemed to be used by every man and his mother. Today however, it’s grown on me. The subtle positions and the use of middle (the old figure of eight) seem to make more sense now. The slightly raised garage door to allow for flashes seems perfect to allow for… alright, I’m exaggerating the beauty of this map. But still, it has honestly grown on me. Once you’ve sorted out positions as CTs it’s a matter of holding down that chimney/window split and once you’ve got that locked down, it’s game over. Probably.

Ahead of Russka next week every team should be hoping for a victory this week, as even if they’ve only played the map once it’s fairly easy to pickup in comparison with the two maps in the next fortnight. Contra is positively mazelike whilst Russka is played so little outside of the US it’s difficult to get wars on.

Anyway, to this weeks matches.

The Last Resort! have a 2/2 record in division one, primarily because of the two draws in week one on de_tuscan. They’ll be looking to maintain that this week, taking on denied. However, my match of the week is in division II, between

TEAM-ENERGY and

2die4 both of who have perfect records. I hope both teams have put a little time into this map as it could be a decent match provided one side doesn’t roll over.
