Go Hard Go Custom - week three

As we cruise into week three of the CPL influenced league, we leave behind the more than slightly confusing outing that was de_cpl_overrun and welcome into the fold that is :

de_cpl_fire.

Mention fire to your average 1.6 player and the closest they’ve probably come to it is watching Pubmasters 1 or that bit with da_bears in Adrenaline 2. However, you guys aren’t the average 1.6 players, so I’m going to presume you’re all ready with strats and counter flashes for this weeks map.

No? Oh.

Fire is one of my favourite maps for a number of reasons. Firstly, tactics pay off. If you’re playing this without an idea of what you and your team are doing at any one time, simply put, you will lose. For this reason, fire usually brings up a collection of exciting matches between underdogs who have put the time in and perhaps, dare I say it, the cocky clans who didn’t feel they needed to spend that extra five minutes downloading the map until the match actually began.

Secondly, the sheer width of this map means a hideous amount of variation on holds and pushes. The closeness of the B bombsite to CT spawn allows for a certain amount of pushing through the side passage but at the same time it’s more than tempting to hold from the stairs to allow for a quick rotation to A or to middle. The same can apply to the A bombsite, but at the same time you need to weigh up whether the gamble of pushing will actually pay off if the Terrorists rush the other site and you’re left with a 30 second run to the other side of the map.

Lastly, I enjoy this map simply because every clan has different calls for different areas of the map. Unlike the “big four” (or big five) which have pretty much set calls, fire throws up a variation on nearly every spot. I’ve heard long A be used interchangeably with short A, brown corridor (…?), stone corridor, pubmasters bit, spiral (which one?), washing lines, da_bears all used as calls. In fact the only three calls that seem to be standard are middle, windows and “THEY’RE HERE”. That put to one side, I prefer this map to strike which has always seemed to be like that younger male cousin you don’t really like but you’re forced to get along with anyway. Contrast to that, fire is the attractive second cousin who you really shouldn’t look at in that way but you can’t help it because she’s really quite hot.

Kissing second cousins ideas aside for one minute, this week should bring up a whole selection of games but my pick this week is supremus versus

Satyr. Satyr are top with two out of two victories, but I can see this match being tight if

supremus have put in the time to work out some basic tactics. If neither side have, then I can see Satyr nudging this.
