It's been a while since we last saw a One Night Stand which is a shame as they always used to be top notch entertainment. Time to put the record stright here and now as we invite sixteen teams to show us what they are made of as they attempt to claim teh crown of One Night Stand 7 winners and join the likes of Fnatic , necroraisers and Four Kings as winners of this one night cup.

Matches will be played on SGL designated servers and subject to standard mr15 SGL match rules. The map rotation for this edition of the cup has been made as straightforward as possible and we would hope that most teas would have their own well drilled tactics for all of the following :

  1. de_inferno
  2. de_train
  3. de_nuke
  4. de_cpl_mill
Matches will begin as ever at 8pm sharp teams turning out late for their matches will be defaulted against as there is not a lot of time available to waste hanging around waiting. We look forward to seeing you a week on Sunday !

CCC Final tonight : nameless win

Posted by sgl Uzi on 13th Apr 2008 @ 2:56pm - 1 Comments

fr nameless were crowned the SteelSeries Continental Challenge Cup Champions tonight after their victory over their Norwegian foes no Team MultiGamer.

After a devastating performance on their own map - de_dust2 the French team looked set for a quick two map romp but the Vikings had a different plan in mind and turned the tables on them in the second map - de_nuke. With the match coming down to a single map tie breaker on de_train the match hung in the balance with Multigamer making some early gains as terrorist before being held in the latter rounds of the first half. The winners however pushed home a succession of rounds during their terrorist half to take the map, the fixture, the play off's - the whole damn thing!

Great play from both teams who gave us a great final to round off the event. and to Jay and Ben at quadV for yet another great broadcast - thanks for it guys.

It was on the 4th of Decemeber last year when the first round of matches in this massive event began and now some 780+ matches later we come to this - the final itself.

 fr nameless 2 - 1
no Team MultiGamer   Details

This match will be broadcast live and exclusive tonight from 8pm only on QuadV with your host Jay Atkins who will bring you the action play by play , round by round with full live and uninterrupted match coverage.

SRCtv will not be available for this match until after the event so if you want to keep up with the action - join Jay, sit back, relax and take in this  match as it unfolds.

Registration for the second season of the Continental Challenge League remains open until Wednesday of this coming week.  We are delighted to announce that we have already received in excess of 300 (three hundred) applications for this event which will see more divisions than before.

Applications end on Wednesday night so if you have not yet registered - dont wait too long! The divisions for the second season of the CCL along with the team who qualified from season one into the CCC will be announced shortly after registration for season two closes.

In the mean time - don't miss the feast of CSS on offer tonight as this CCC comes to a close...

Continental Challenge League : Registration open.

We aimed high last with the first season of the Continental Challenge League (CCL) and with what turned out to be the biggest league format event in the world of CSS to date we feel we have established something that provides us (and you for that matter) with solid foundations for future seasons.

As ever we are not afraid to try something new and different and as usual we learned a lot in this first season. It's a very different thing to run a tight elite league in the spotlight and entirely another to run an event on this scale. We deliberately gave the teams involved as much autonomy as possible to see just what would happen and aside from an expected high number of defaults we were delighted to see how the players taking part responded, this has given us the heart to take on another season putting the things we have learned into place.

First up, the CCL will have it's own admin team. That is to say that you will have five (already in place) or more dedicated admins for this one event. There will always be someone available for you (irc/vent/email) to answer your queries. After each round of matches there will be checks on unplayed ties and questions asked about them and where needed scheduling of missed matches will be undertaken to avoid the all too easy "just enter a default" syndrome. After seeing the majority of teams get stuck in and attempt to play their matches we feel that the main thing lacking was enough admin involvement, hands on - and on a daily basis.

We started the previous season adding SGLac to any server we were requested, but with many of you changing ip's what seemed like every other day (hahah) we changed this and simply made SGLac available for any CSS player to use on any server at any time. This meant we didn't get swamped with Ac requests at 7.55 every night which I hope you found made things much easier. Judging by the way the requests suddenly ended after we made SGLac freely available I'm sure it was appreciated.

As for the format of this second season, obviously it will depend on the number and location of the teams who apply but we hope to keep the national and regional divisions as close as possible to last time. You will also be pleased to know that since we have completed a whole season of the CCL and the CCC we can now assign coefficients to the league for qualification to the next CCC. The thirty two teams who qualified for the CCC this season will be notified and they will also appear in a follow up post shortly.

In the mean time, please feel free to sign up to the second mammoth season of the SteelSeries CCL and watch out for our dedicated CCL/CCC admin team as they go through IRC and introduce themselves. Don't forget the CCC final is coming up very soon so check back for an update on when this match will be played - the culmination of over 780 matches leading to this one final showdown for the Continental Challenge Cup champions!

UPDATE : 8 hours in and over 100 applications. Nice one guys!

The SteelSeries CCC : The end is nigh

We started off with one hundred and sixty teams and now we are down to the last three as the SteelSeries Continental Challenge cup draws to a close.

Already in the final are the Norwegian elite in the shape of no Team MultiGamer who beat off the challenge of fi Afterlife * ULTIMAT in their two maps to one victory.

In the other semi final we have the all conquering Czech powerhouses of cz eSuba css who will take on the quality French outfit fr Creativ' for the right to contest the final.

With the date for this second semi final (and therefore the final itself) yet to be confirmed you can check out the brackets and the path these teams took to reach this stage. You can either check out the interactive bracket below or you can still find the default version via the Tournament Overview link at the bottom of this post.

You can view this bracket by zooming in using the slider bar and navigate by dragging the image.

In other news on the SteelSeries Continental Challenge League event, the second season will begin very soon where we intend to put into place the many things we have learned administrating an event so wide in scope. Expect to see a leaner, meaner animal the second time around!

Heat : The fools panel

Posted by sgl Uzi on 28th Feb 2008 @ 1:00pm - 44 Comments

Each week GaZ and Felix will predict the outcome of the matches in the HEAT group qualifiers. They will joined by a different "special guest" each time for a different outlook on the teams and matches at hand. The important thing though is that each week the user (this means you!) with the highest points total will win a prize! Entering couldn't be easier - here's what you need to do...

WIN PRIZES : All registered theSGL members have a chance to win a SteelSeries QcK simply by predicting as many results correctly as possible. Whoever has the highest points total overall will win the pad, we have one for each round of group fixtures up for grabs.

HOW TO ENTER : Simply post your list of predictions in a comment below. No entries posted after the scheduled match time will be eligible. In the event two or more users have the same points tally then the user who posted their predictions first will be considered the winner.

SCORING: Correct winner and scoreline (eg Team A 16:14 Team B) 10 points. Correct winner (eg Team A 16:14 Team B) 3 points. Only matches that are played and result entered before 23:00UK March5th will contribute to the scoring process. All defaulted matches will be considered void. Matches rescheduled to a time later than as specified above will be considered void for this competition.

On with the Fools Panel itself then.... as you can see all three of the guys have made their predictions and we will see who has got their finger on the pulse and who has got their finger... (shall we say "somewhere else"). Remember you can go along with their opinions or choose to go your own way. Copy and paste the first comment to make posting your own entry that much easier  Good luck!

HEAT : Matchnight two

Posted by sgl Uzi on 28th Feb 2008 @ 11:18am - 0 Comments

We bore witness to some tight matches and some total demolitions last week in various measures as HEAT kicked off it's first round of fixtures. We will take a quick look back at last week and how the teams got on and the fixtures for htis week including a light hearted section I have dubbed the "fools panel" - well it does have GaZ in it...

Straight into our featured match for this week and whilst we stay in the same group as our last feature (one of the same teams even) there can be very little doubt that this is a superb match in prospect

Wednesday 28/2 20:00UK 21:00CET - SRCtv - Cast : TBC

After a slow start in last weeks fixture se Stockholm-Magnetik picked up the pace in or around round four and never really looked back winning all the rounds from there onwards and running our speedy 16-4 winners. As you can see from the match stats crabbie was on top form but if you want to see some top class awping then snag a copy of the demo and check out the match from sparkles perspective - classy play all round I'm sure you will agree.

With all due respect to verve, this weeks tie is going to be a different affair entirely as they meet the hot shots of uk Team Ebuyer who kindly agree their first match due to the other teams player availability. This means of course that this is the opening tie for the team and they will obviously want to start things off with a win. There are not many opponents around that present the challenge they will encounter here tonight and things could well be tough for the UK team.

Overall this is a tough result to call, but if there had to be one winner I had to name right now - it would be definitely have to be the audience who will be rewarded with a great match to entertain them.

The whole of last week's results can of course be found all together on our tournament results section but some of the performances do warrant a special mention.

fi Menace.fi and uk CoolerMaster fought out a war that ended with a 16:14 win for the United Kingdom side, this was always considered as being one of the harder to call matches of the week and the close scoreline confirmed this, ultimately Menace unlucky not to get anything from this game.

Another match where the teams finished with the tinest amount of daylight between them was in Group B where Hungarians hu Dalay Lamas squeezed out de RAPID! by a single round to take the match (and the three points) 16:14. With matches agaisnt necroraisers and verve for the two teams, they wont be expecting anything less than another full scale battle this week either.

cz eSuba css beat off a strong challenge from Iberian superstars es OverGame in their opening match which despite some great work by the Spaniards went the way of many matches involving the Czech powerhouses - a win for eSuba, this time by four clear rounds 16:12.

Another Spanish team faired better as they contested an all our war with neighbours Portugal represented by pt Core Gaming. The well known es redCode roster won the match with room to spare but still managed to be taken down several times by the tough Core team. At the end of the match it was maximum points at 16:9 to redCode.

You wait for ages and then three come along at once - back to Spain again where es Wizards.QPAD hosted their tie against all round good guys and long term team hu Old Boys Inc. Continuing their run of form and confirming their reputation as a quality side the Hungarians took the 16:6 victory in this encounter.

Over to Italy where it inferno got the drop on Estonians ee Double-Trouble and got their qualifying campaign off to a perfect start with three points in the bag at this early stage. Despite giving away six rounds altogether inferno did nto seem to be in any danger of losing this tie once they got into their groove - ending 16:6 winners.

ru Begrip Gaming wobbled slightly on their way to a 16:11 win over de ATROX GAMING.crowfire.de who threatened to build some momentum several times during the tie, crucially the danger was snuffed out by the Russians at source (pun fully intended) who did enough overall to get off to a good start in the group stage of this event.

Maybe it's simply because I know the guys, but for me one of the better performances of the week came from kw Dubai[CGS]Mirage as they put their 160-200 (it was a bad night)  pings aside and concentrated on the matter at hand - fragging. Eighteen rounds later the match was over and be Online United Nations were on the receiving end of a 16:2  thumping. Full match stats and demo are available for this match.

As for what is in store for this week, well we are going to look at the matches from a different perspective with what I have called the "fools panel". Each week the ever so friendly GaZ and Felix will predict the results of the weeks matches. Each week they will also be joined by a "special guest" who will add their picks to the article.

Points will be awarded for correct result predictions in the following manner :

  • Correct winner and scoreline (eg Team A 16:14 Team B) 10 points
  • Correct winner (eg Team A 16:14 Team B) 3 points

Head over to the "Fools Panel" post on theSGL where you can leave your predictions in the comments. Each week the person who posts their predictions in the comments and gets the highest overall points will receive a SteelSeries QcK for their efforts. Should there be a tie for first place then the user who posted their comments first shall be considered the winner - so don't delay post your predictions now!

Heat - Matchnight One

Posted by sgl Uzi on 21st Feb 2008 @ 12:41pm - 7 Comments

Some frankly mouth watering ties lie in wait for us this evening as the first round of matches in HEAT kick off in earnest. With teams ranging from the colder climate of Finland right round to the blistering sunshine of Dubai, from mighty CGS franchises to "once a week online heroes" the teams collide head on tonight in a series of bruising encounters.

Usually you would get a full list of fixtures here but with so many matches taking place it's going to be a lot easier on the eye to check out the official fixtures page where you can also leave your opinions and predictions. We also urge teams to post any details of SRCtv coverage they may have in place so users have the option of seeing as many matches as possible.

In each round of fixtures we aim to bring you (at least) two featured matches with extra information and top of the bill coverage. For this first round of fixtures the two featured matches feature two of the heavyweight CGS teams, one you will be familiar with - the other possibly less so. ....

In September last year I was delighted to be there when EYEballers were selected to be the CSS squad for Stockholm Magnetik by their general manager - none other than the legendary Emil "Heaton" Christensen. Tonight we get our first look at them in an online event since that night in Birmingham. Don't forget to check out their own article on this match where "sparkle" reveals how the team will approach this opening tie on a map not included in their usual practice schedule...

Going up against the franchise team are some players back from a lengthy break (somewhere in the six month region?) as verve set out to  enact their very own David/Goliatch showdown. Made up of players from the now defunct Planet6 and GotReg? teams there is no doubt that these guys are more than capable of dishing out the kills. Whether or not they will be able to go toe to toe with their opposition tonight remains to be seen however.

Noting that Stockholm didn't seem to be relishing the prospect of a match on de_cpl_mill, GAZ caught up with verve|sthrlnd to find out if this was going to inspire any extra confidence from his team...

theSGL|GaZ : Your going up against one of the cgs franchised teams, how are you feeling about this, you must be a little confident with the map being mill?

[verve]sthrlnd : We've been together for only a short time. We haven't done a lot of practice on mill due to Callum having exams at the moment. I reckon it will be pretty even on the preparation front. It's not like these haven't played mill in the past. We're just hoping we give them a challenge.

This match is scheduled for 20:30UK 21:30CET and details for SRCtv will appear on this page nearer to match time.

Just as with Stockholm, I found myself at the Dubai event (I go get around a bit don't I !) where GameWorks destroyed everyone else at the event with some ease and  if memory serves me correctly were only "pushed" in one tie conceding six rounds. Whilst the franchise itself did not do too well at the PanAsian event and failed to qualify for the World Finals in LA the CSS team did play rather well throughout and showed themselves to be one of the better teams in attendance.

Playing from so far away does not do great things for their ping so expect to see some 100-130 figures in the ping column, but don't count them out simply on this basis. They have been playing a hell of a lot of matches against European teams for a while now and don't let their poor connections get in the way of a good performance. No doubt about it that these guys could well surprise a lot of people...

OUN have been playing our events on and off fr some time now, recently they did move to another organisation (who's name escapes me right now sorry) but it would seem thigns didn't pan out too well for them as they folded soon after and have now returned with the same roster under their original name to pick up where they left off.

This match is scheduled for 20:30UK 21:30CET and details for SRCtv will appear on this page nearer to match time.

Heat : the teams

Posted by sgl Uzi on 11th Feb 2008 @ 9:58am - 3 Comments

As you probably already gathered , we had an overwhelming response for this event with over two hundred applications for the forty eight slots. With so many teams coming to the table for this tournament we have set up both a qualification play off to fill two places in each group (four teams already seeded through into each group of six) and a separate event for the teams who either lose their qualification match or were not drawn into the Heat event itself (more on this later this evening).

So - Heat, We have at the moment eight groups of six teams. Each group has four teams assigned to it already from the pools of seeds we sorted out. Each group also has two spare slots with no teams yet assigned. These sixteen slots will be filled by the winners of a single match qualification round. We don't like to say no here at theSGL and rather than close the door on so many team we have given as many as possible the opportunity to take part in Heat - it's up to you to show us what you have got and club your opponent into submission and claim that group stage slot for yourself!

The top two teams from each group will go through into the traditional best of three knockout stage until we have our winner. You can find (in a few minutes) the teams laid out in their group format and the qualifier matches laid out via the tournament overview (linked below) - as ever any queries come and see us on IRC (try gaz / ateyu for fastest results).

Good luck to everyone as ever - and don't forget there is another add on event coming along in the next 24 hours for the teams who didn't get into or qualify for the Heat event itself.
