Hello,

I live in a student house and we have 4 meg internet which is good.

But got an arse of an housemate who constantly uses bittorrent 24/7 and weve spoken to him but he refuses to take it off or agree to use it only over night or during the day. Anyway, its making it hard for any of the remainin housemates to play games or even surf the bloody internet as he is using it all the bandwidth. Anyway, i own the netgear router and am like in charge of the network. Just wondering if there was a way to allocate him only x amount of download and x amount of upload cause its getting beyond a joke now!

Any help is much appreciated!

thanks

Jst threaten him damn it, theres only one of him. Get all lary with him or jst disconnect him from the router/internet when starts downloading during the day. Problems like this are best solved with a bit of aggression.
I know cause im in exactly in the same situation, the only problem i have is they are all spacs and dont know when they are downloading so it makes it hard to tell whos downloading what.

Trust me Winking

Alternatively u cud try being really nice and pussy foot around the guy thats downloading and let him make you all look like mugs cause hes getting exactly what he wants.

Not really sure what you can do techie wise... but you could change the password, and refund him the months money. Tell him that unless he agrees to the house terms, he will have to get his own internet, and you and the remaining house mates split the cost.

That would really piss me off with the internet though. How much does someone need to download? And why cant it just be done at night!? Idiots.

It will probably depend on the router from a technical standpoint. Not that familiar with commercial routers, but I'm assuming at least some of them allow you to throttle bandwidth based on the application (port is useless cause he can change it). We never bothered with anything like that in our student flat, we just did what was suggested above and told each other to turn torrents down when needed. The thing that always killed the Internet in my experience was upload. If he is using private trackers then he probably won't want to turn down his upload, but if hes just using public trackers then there is no reason to have upload turned up anything over say 6kb/s (I'm assuming uTorrent). Just tell him to limit that because it will have to bearing on his download speed.

Netgear routers don't have bandwidth limitation features unfortunately, you could as already suggested block the ports his torrent application is using - or install a bandwidth limitation service onto his laptop/pc - which will run in the background and limit inbound/outbound traffic - you mainly want to be focusing on limiting his upload, as thats whats causing your game play difficulties.

Either that, unplug him from the router and tell him to stop messing around - or block his laptops MAC address in the wireless configuration (depending on what your setup us)

he sounds like a cunt. ban his computer from using the internet and dont tell him.
u pay to have him leech all ur internet? make him pay for the next couple of months while u enjoy it lag free. if he dont like it.....kick him in the shins, then the balls, push him outside and lock the door.
problem solved
