Right, last night my new PC arrived.

Turned it on, loaded everything up, cool!

So, i try and connect to the internet, config my wireless router with the mac address so it can connect to my PC..... and it connected, sick.

Open up IE and i get "Page no available". FUCK

So after pissing around for a while with settings on my router and PC i give up and ask a few ppl on IRC what it is.... after about an hour of going through settings someone said "andy, your router is compatible for Vista isnt it?" .............

so i check it up and im pretty certain that my router ISNT compatible for Vista.

so.....

1) Is this really the problem? iv never heard of routers having to be compatible for OS's.
2) What is my best option forward......
- By a new router that is vista compatible and fucking end up spending 2hours pissing around with wireless settings
- By a new router and get some1 to configure it for me and pay labour.
- Remove Vista from my PC and install XP (I have a spare disk and key)

Now the only problem with removing Vista is that my PC has 4GB RAM and the only reason i got the 4GB RAM is because i had Vista 64BIT. If i remove Vista and install XP will havin 4GB RAM fucking piss up XP/my new PC.

Hope you understand.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

it depends on how much ram your gfx card has, if it has 512mb, then ul get 3.5gb, if it has 768, ul get 3.15gb etc.

Right, i just rung BT for a bit of advise.

They said, it wont matter if my router is compatible with vista or not...... he said it was problem just the wrong settings i entered into the router...

and to be fair, i did connect to the router but just didnt get any internet access....

LOL, oh deary me.. routers arnt hard to install/setup.. pretty much all done for you with the wizards that they come with now days.. :/

Clueeh, if you can only connect to local, that means that your not connected to the internet, IE, you havnt put in the correct login settings for ADSL or similar things like that.

Kelevra, PPPoE Winking

A routers OS compatibility shouldnt matter, aslong as the OS supports tcp/ip which is does.. althou some do play funny beggers. Which is why i asked for router make/model n ting ;X

Homeplugs are a decent way to get around the fact that you "have" to use wireless, its the better than using wireless thats for sure..

Its an odd one, since the other computers in the house get internet... i presume its just you thats slipped up and misconfigured it somewhere and borked it up Big grin

Andeh, When your pc connects to the wireless, does it pop up saying Local only? or does it say Local & Internet?

When it connected it just said "connect to NETGEARDAVID"... then i opened up the network connection and it showed:

andy-PC --- (connected to) --- NETGEARDAVID ---- (not connected) ---- INTERNET

something along thoses lines.....

after bout 2mins of talkin to BT he said "do u want me to send over an engineer? "no thanks" "ok well thats all i can help you with".... basically want me to pay but ill call em again when i get home. so no, they didnt give me any settings or advise really, just the fact that my routers compatibility with OS's isnt whats stopping my inet connection, just suggested that its the settings.
