Hi there, I am about to change colleges to study the National Diploma for IT practioners (BTEC 18 Units) or something like that. I just want to know if its worth it for going to university, or whether I should just do normal A-levels to get to uni?

And also, any uni's and courses you would recommend for ICT when I get that far, i..e software development, or games development?

Cheeers.

if it's a diploma that means it's a degree doesn't it?

in which case you wouldn't need to go to university

or is it a foundation diploma or something?

I went to visit Portsmouth uni on their open day, and they were no where near as impressive as Kent. Plus its like a mini London there which I wasn't keen on.

Forgot to say, if you can get into Southampton then thats the bees knees, you do need Maths at A-level though. Most of the top IT courses ask for that.

plesh, it depends on which course your actually doing, like the (12unit) (14unit) or (18unit) I think, because my one is worth the equivalent of 3A-levels, and the other ones are different.

And I'm not sure, I guess it must be a foundation diploma, because they talk about going to Uni after with it.

And I'm also not sure what I exactly want to do, so ICT sounds good, and I don't think my college offers any computing courses.

Cheers for the help so far guys

A Foundation Diploma is usually for Humanities style subjects.

I did one for Art, and had the choice to go to University to do it as an extra year before the degree started, or to do it at a local college.

For Art, it seemed to matter very little what your A Levels were, instead the emphasis was on getting this Foundation Diploma to present a portfolio good enough for entry to a degree course. I believe this is much the same with any course that requires a Foundation year.

It was also worth a shitload of UCAS points but only if you were applying for the desired subject.

Hope that helps

Ive just finished the software development course in that(18 unit one). Its easy but it doesnt go into alot of detail into the different areas of graphics/website/programming etc. Like said above its easy and will definatly get you in Uni, should you pass it ofc.

the answer is yes. i did the same btec as you're about to do, not only does it prepare you perfectly for the generic first year of a computing related degree but i'm sure its also easier to get more ucas points by doing it rather than a levels. i'm currently starting my second year of computer games development.
