I just need to reiterate what a complete spastic idiot rewind is, I am gloriously delighted that some other people have noticed.

jizz did you not read my other reply... the official explanation is on the internet... its not an of course it will take off because if the speed of the conveyor belt is EXACTLY the same as the speed of the plane then the plane will simple stand still.

ps. Rewind is not inco... 2 different people, just same attitudes haha

I think there's another one like this, something about 'if 100 birds are in a moving train flying about, do they add to the weight of the train'. I think. It sounds a bit silly now that I've written it

Yeah that's the trap most people fall into.. Just read any of my prev posts and think about it :\

It's like saying can a plane take off if a conveyor belt is NEXT to it.. Since the wheels dont slow down / speed up the plane -> they have no effect on it's forward movement, they just keep the underside off the floor

doesnt matter wether its on a converyor belt or not, the forward thrust is not produced in the weels its produced from the jets/propellors, so all it meens is that the wills will end up spinning twice as fast, but the plane will still move forward.

As long as the plane is moving through the air fast enough it will take off. A planes ability to take-off has no connection to the speed of the wheels. As long as the air's motion, relative to the plane, is fast enough, the wonders of fluids motion around the wing will create pressure difference and hence lift. Angel

oh, and if the tracks are going opposite ways, then that will actually be pushing the plane forward as well.

Edit:

Yeah, but that's not where people go wrong. They assume after hearing "the runway moves at the same speed in the opposite direction" that this in some way affects the planes movement.

hate to be a cunt, but if you turned the engines off and just shot it along the ground at a fast speed on the wheels it would still take off take off, simple aerodynamics and phisics.

yep.

The wheels don't affect the movement, just stops the plane from touching the floor.

it wont move :S if the floor is going to same speed but the oppsite way, it will stay in the same place. therefor not gaining enough speed to take off :] ?
