Alright folks,
I'm having a right nightmare with my bastard of a PC at the moment. When I turn it on it comes straight up with an error saying -
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
"WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM".
I have various partitions and therefore I don't need to keep anything on the C: drive so I reinstalled windows. All worked fine for a couple of hours, turned it off and back on, BAM, same error. Tried once more and still the same error. I use XP and even tried installing Vista but still the same problem.
What the fuck do I need to do?
Anybody got a half decent 2nd hand PC for sale??
Many thanks

well it's defo a corrupt reg file, but if i'm correct, you have to go into regedit to fix it. strange thing is tho that a format didn't work :S

Put in system disk, go to repair options, go to command prompt or if its XP it should log on automatically.
Type chkdsk -r
Fixed.

Theres also sfc /scannow but i think that can only be done in windows enviroment with admin priveleges... sometimes work in safe mode as well but its weird.
That checks your Windows Files and checks they are all there etc... great after virus scans(!)

if a format didn't work what makes you think repairing it will?
in my small minded opinion your hard drive is almost deaded, a mate of mine had the same problem, helped him out with it, corrupted 3 times in a month period and now won't even format propperly.
if you can't afford a new hard drive you could try running some repair tools, another friend had some great results from repairing faulty sectors but it took him like 2-3 days solid
