Internet affecting FPS

At archies and for some reason the internet is giving us both hideous FPS drops.. it doesn't normally do it.

We played like all day friday with fps lag and had no idea why, then I tested my FPS on a LAN server and it was fine, so I rebooted the router and then we played online and the FPS was fine again..

However, it keeps happening, meaning we have to keep rebooting the router in order to fix it, anyone had a problem similar to this before and know how to fix it?

Is it a virgin media superhub by anychance?

If so turn off the ip filtering or something like that on the router. It stops the router been spammed with information but unfortunately it's so sensitive it blocks packets from gaming giving quite a lot of packet loss. So it might not have actually been a drop in FPS as such but your packets not going through and updating the information ingame around you.

so when you have net graph up, you have fps lower than 100?

It must be something to do with packets, It happens to me when I use MIRC which uses virtually no bandwidth

run trace route tests and ping tests to 2 locations and paste results

The superhubs are netgears. But older netgears have the same option too. Best way to check if it's packet loss is to go to www.pingtest.net and run the test there. If you have packet loss go into the router and turn it off. It's named something like IP Filtering.
