HUM vauxhall corsa, Ford fiesta, renault clio etc. Mainly small hatchbacks with small engines as insurance will kill you with a fresh liscence and no no claims etc. Aim for a 1 ltr if possible i know it sounds shit but its a good start unless you wanna go with the co op and get a black box

In the Netherlands the Daihatsu Cuore anywhere from 85 till 05 are the best. Really light, really cheap insurance and 1 liter on about 22 km (in/out city average) (thats about 80 km or 50 miles on a gallon?) best car for this these stupid gas prices.
And be honest they look fking awesome! This was mine:

Depends, if you want bare minimum cheap and lowest insurance group, thing's like a ford ka its one of the lowest insurance groups. And could get one cheap.

But your not going to attract any females driving one of those I tell thee. And be prepared to get quite a bit of stick from your mates :-P

I'd recommend a pug 106 probably, easy to drive and maintain and quite cheap to run.

It's not my first car, however, I should have got one as my first car - an EG Honda civic, these things are bulletproof. I purchased mine from an old ladies son, who was left to him as she was 92 and gave up driving. Anyway, she was the first owner only used it rarely so got it with 25k on the clock for 1000 quid, now it's kicking just over 50k.. got it a year ago, it's traveled from Oxford to Leeds a few times ;), never skipped a beat.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201218468146794/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-age/over_10_years_old/maximum-mileage/up_to_40000_miles/model/civic/make/honda/radius/1501/postcode/ox120nw/page/1?logcode=p

Mine was advertised for 1600 - serviced every 6months at Honda (sometimes every 250miles it worked out at).. MPG is so good - mines the LSI model (1.5 16v about 90odd bhp, so for a light car isn't too slow off the mark). It's harder to get a manual on low mileage, as the oldies love their autos, but they love these and you're able to pick up an economical bullet proof mobile. Wait around and a manual will come up.

I've changed the cambelt out of choice, just to be safe and that's it..

Just a well recommended suggestion :D

Nice clean example, once again an auto but seems an alright price:

I'm on my first car atm, 2002 Fiat Punto, insurance? £2000 to pay monthly but paid £1200 outright, ouch.

Your postcode will have a part to play in this too.

Seen a few 206's, punto's, a seat ibiza and a corsa i'm pretty interested in, from experience which insurance providers offered you the best quotes?

Admiral have been cheapest for me 2years in a row. My first car was and still is a 1.4 Golf. £1500 for the first year. Only major issue I had with it was the cat but I got that fixed for cheap.
