Hi, i'm currently applying for 4 jobs in Property based jobs in London and I've only been to London 2/3 times. I have little money currently but the jobs pay 20-26k with some paying for tube/train cards for the full year which i'm told is worth 3,500.

As I have no knowledge of London anyone give me some help on these aspects:

How much is it going to cost me for accommodation to live near / in London and travel to work which around Victoria area. Would it be best living miles out and just getting a train in, more cost effective? Accommodation such as a single room, shared bathroom etc.

I'm prone to getting lost whilst travelling, any insights to using the tubes/trains within London, seemed very confusing when i went their recently.

As I wouldn't be paid until the end of my 1st month, working on this basis will be strict and i'm aware might impact my accommodation choice and dependent on contact lengths and possibly of re-locating after my 1st pay check.

Thanks for any help, i'm sure there will be some typical sgl trolling.

No, hence why i'll be earning 20k+ for my work experience for my university placement.

I have no idea about typical delays from London if you decide to live far out or other aspects hence asking.

PROBLEM?

tube travel is piss, just look for the nearest tube stop near your destination, then check which colour line stops at that stop and hop on any train that is going in that direction, don't overthink it.

hop on spareroom.co.uk for a 'quick' look at how much you'll be paying in that area (search by random post code) - but i would recommend gumtree to find a place, more choice, free to use (well, more free) and some way better deals there!

totally guessing here but i'd say 500-600 per calender month plus bills of 50 to 100.

26k is about 1700 a month
20 is about 1300 a month

so entirely depends how you live..

edit: house shares of course!!

Your bills will be more than £100. Council tax alone for band A is about £70 a month, and that's with a 25% discount if you live on your own.

Then you've got gas, electric, water, TV license (which you have to pay double when you first move in), internet, line rental and contents insurance. Plus other things like sky and your mobile. It all adds up mate!

We've got budget planners at work if you would like me to e-mail you one? It just lists all your costs so you know what to spend every month. 8)

getting a flat in london is going to cost a bomb, you're better looking in the suburbs or just outside and commuting in (only take like 30 mins to get where you want anyway)

If you look hard enough on gumtree you can find places for as low as 120pw. Usually they're in shittier areas though but if it's temporary it's worth putting up with for a month. Crime is highly over exaggerated anyway.

The Tube is easy once you've used it a few times. Just pay attention to the maps and before you know it you won't need them anymore and could plan a journey anywhere in the city in your head. People constantly give London shit but I'd say it's definitely worth living here. Why? Because there is literally an infinite amount of things to do over a fucking enormous area. If you get bored in London you're doing it wrong. There is always an event taking place. ALWAYS. I wouldn't recommend living miles out and getting a train in I reckon it would be more hassle. Look in East London for cheap accommodation.

I've moved around a lot in my life, around the UK and abroad, including places like Dubai and Brussels. Nothing compares to London IMO.

Just PM me your e-mail mate and I'll send you one on Monday. 8)

They're supplied by the FSA and it's a requirement to fill one out if you're applying for a mortgage.

350 a month is your tower block shit holes in London, you'll be wanting to pay at least 500pcm for somewhere decent, before bills. My flat in Loughborough is 500pcm before bills lol

Nah, if you're lucky you can find somewhere decent for 350-400. It's a long-shot though. My mate found a place just off Portabello Road for around 400pcm. It was just one room in a small basement flat though. Still, not bad for the price. Saved up plenty of spending money :P

Then again this might have been a complete one off chance.

You wont find somewhere half decent inside zone 1/2/3 without paying atleast 600 PCM (150PCW).

You are better of going to zone 5 or 6 and getting a 20min tube into london, which will cost you around £10 a day return on Oyster)

Don't forget to factor in travel costs to your Birmingham based gym.
