TF2 Season Kicks of tonight

Posted by sgl Uzi on 23rd Mar 2009 @ 11:45am - 8 Comments
Matches begin tonight in our latest season of Team Fortress 2 as the teams across the two league divisions square up to each other on those most venerable of maps - Well and Granary.

With the two maps in each round format the scoring system is simple if you each win one map then each team will end up with one point, if one team wins both maps then they will receive three points and their opposition sadly no points.

Though matches are listed with todays date you should of course be aware that you are free to schedule your matches to any point over the week as long as the tie is played before the next one is due to be played.

You can add your own scores directly to the match details page if you are the leader of a team. This option will however only appear AFTER the scheduled (Monday of each week) match date. If you do play your game earlier please contact and admin in #theSGL or via mail@theSGL.com where we will be pleased to enter you score for you. (This system is in place to ensure that scores are not entered for the wrong week of matches).

With one result already in the bag (eu Demise-esports.tf2 2 - 0 lt team31) the fixture list looks like this :

Division One

 Team A   Team B
ru LOL Team vs es overGame e-Sports TF2 Details

Team Fortress 2 : Registration Open

Posted by sgl Uzi on 26th Feb 2009 @ 1:30pm - 18 Comments
We are inviting teams to register for our upcoming season of Team Fortress 2 action which will begin in a little over three weeks time.

The season league format will be an eight team Invite division, an eight team premiership division and two Championship tier divisions of up to ten teams in each. It is not our intention to create a huge "unwieldy" format here but instead to keep things tightly focussed and organised at all times.

Matches will be scheduled for the Monday of each week however the matches may be played at any time during the week (ie  - before your next fixture). Matches will be played on teams own servers and team leaders will be able to enter the results into the website directly upon completion of the tie. This will of course mean you will not have to report scores through an admin though you can report the details to us if you prefer.

Anyone familiar with theSGL will know that we try and do ur best regarding coverage of our own events and have built up an array of contributors for other game types posting previews and predictions for upcoming rounds of ties - if anyone out there would like to try their hand and provide some enthusiastic coverage for this League Season please do let us know via mail@theSGL.com

Any queries please consult an OP in #theSGL

Interview with a Random

Posted by uk Ecto on 14th Sep 2008 @ 9:00pm - 10 Comments

The fourth in the series of Interview with a Random comes straight from the depths of the newly formed but fragtastic TF2 scene, Stealthy from the brand new TcM.TF2 squad found some time to give us some words..... Enjoy!

Hey, first off all thanks for taking some time out to speak to me today, I know things have been a bit hectic today of all days with the clan, could you tell everyone a little bit about who you are, what you do, what your background is?

Its not a problem, my name is Nigel I am 19. I currently live in Scotland and am currently playing TeamFortress 2 in a clan called WOTR - now officially known as Team-CoolerMaster! I started gaming back in 2000 at the age of 11 with my 33.6k modem on Counter-Strike 5.2 I got on a demo disk in a Pc Gamer magazine. I then moved onto a game introduced to me by my brother "Team Fortress Classic" where I then started to take interest in clan style matches. I played Team Fortress Classic for 3-4 years. then moved back to Counter-Strike for a more serious approach and then moved onto playing Painkiller for 2 years. After Painkiller died I decided to take a break from gaming. 2 years later TeamFortress 2 was announced and my interest in gaming was picked up again :D

Could you give us a run down of the members of the team, strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes..... what they're all like to play with?

Xman: I don't think I will ever meet anyone so willing and dedicated to a team and game. WOTR/TCM would not have been here without his support. He is the back bone of our success. He runs us, he keeps us right, he's now a little inactive because he is a very busy man. Its hard to believe the man can do what he does, with his busy lifestyle of his job wife and family. So I have a lot of respect for Jim.

Byte: Our Demoman and A huge team binder in game and in game team leader. With ridiculous game-sense and knowledge of all classes he is probably one of the most valuable in game players we have.

Evil: Our soldier with Accurate long range rockets and a good survivor without his medic, he delivers the pressure on the opposing team.

AppZ: brilliant scatter gun aim and confidence in game, shame the bugger is the most negative person in the universe haha.

coinz: Quiet on Communication but a very effective defensive soldier, lack of comm's now and then, but there is sometimes a language barrier for coinz because he's from Portugal. But his Ability to read the game makes up for it.

albert: Probably plays the most blamed class in the game, he delivers under pressure from rockets and grenades, and the great ability to command and put up with our shouting and calls for a medic.

Topgear: Plays the multi-role in the team, delivering a 2nd demoman, heavyweaponguy or soldier when needed.

You mentioned TCM, it was announced on Wednesday of this week that your team WOTR had been taken into the TCM organisation; is it fair to say WOTR picked up a few awards in there time? could you give us a bit of an overview of the team for those readers who don't know much about the scene or your team?

For months we could not decide whether to be picked up by an organisation or not. WOTR was originally founded by Xman your SGL TF2 head admin as a fun TFC clan. We could not decide for Xman, it was an extremely hard decision to make. The reason we became interested was due to how successfully the alpha team have been performing in the last 2 months. WOTR were starting to make an impact on the TF2 scene and were developing a known name in the lower standard e-sports communitys. I think one of the hardest things was the possibility of upsetting our other division in our team. The Beta, Gamma TF2 squads and the CSS division. Anyway from what I could tell the guys took it well and in an understandable way. For the people that don't know us. We currently play in ETF2L Division 1 and seeded first to win this season, our latest achievement was coming first at i34 and taking first place in the ETF2l 3rd Cup.

Well it sounds like it's fair to say that your team is certainly one not to be underestimated under any circumstances, which sort of makes me wonder about why you decided to join TCM. The organisation is certainly a good one, but there CSS team recently folded and there CS 1.6 team can't get past Dignitas or 4Kings in the UK scene, why them?

Its a good question. The decision to join TCM was on our own accord. One of the things we were looking for in an organisation was workable friendly people but with the professional approach. When Xman and the team spoke to Whitley (The new front man of TCM) we felt he was approachable and such a great person to work with in our game and the future of TCM. Our other possible candidates that I can not really mention but we felt TCM were the right Calibre for us and allow us that sort of freedom that other teams and organisations wouldn't allow us. It all boils down to the fact that they offer what we need and vice versa but with the fantastic friendly yet professional approach. However I am not one to criticize other divisions in my team, TCM have now picked up a new CSS team which have great potential from what I can tell, and the CS team are all fantastic players! Got to remember the 4k and Dignitas 1.6 squads are very strong teams in 1.6. I wouldn't be to disappointed with the results the CS squad delivered in the latest qualifying matches for the ESL-Pro Series!

Well lets move away from the team side of it, the TF2 scene on the whole is one that is obviously not as established as some of the other games about at the moment, games like counter-strike, AA, the COD series and CSS have been around for a lot longer, do you feel the TF2 scene is still growing and developing or is it now at it's peak and the best it's ever going to be?

Yeah completely correct. TeamFortress 2 hasn't even been around for a year. The Counter-strike Source community is stupidly big. I think I can safely say that TeamFortress 2 will never be as big as CSS however I can't back that up - no one can tell. I guess the success of any competitive game is the interest in professional organisations and people who actually play the game e.g. the community. Over the past months I have seen a huge increase in the number of people in war channels and pick-up channels. Also the interest of Pc Gamer delivering a LAN in late September with a prize pool of £15000 for TeamFortress 2 is a massive step in the development in competitive play with TeamFortress 2. And lastly Multiplay have now announced prize money for i35. The future still looks bright for the game.

Just for anyone interested out there, on a global scale at the moment, who you do think comes in the Top3 best teams around, and how do you think the UK's teams would stand up to them?

I cant really decide, i have about 7 teams in my head right now that could come on the top 3 bracket. I think the top teams are in no particular order are: Pandemic, 4Kings, Oslo, TCM, Interrobang, TLR, Ubersexuals. Then the underdogs and to watch out for teams are crucimentum and Vale- teams like that. I hate to say that most of the top level teams are central European as there are not many massively competitive clans in the UK that play TF2 the only ones that stand out are wotr|tcm, TLR, and the clan that were UK based "Knights" now known as Ubersexual. But they have recruited a lot of Swedish players so they aren't really a UK based team any more and DSCB red team which has just folded last Tuesday.

Well thanks for your honesty, and your time, I know it's always an hour lost to sit here and talk to me, but still, it's very much appreciated. I wish you all the best with your new organisation, I'm sure we will be hearing a lot more about you in the future as you continue to kick ass in TF2. If you have any shouts, feel free.

A special thanks To Xman aka Jim for his divided time and attention to the team. Thanks to the rest of wotr teams that are supporting us with this change. Another massive thank you to TCM and their sponsors for this massive opportunity and believe in TF2- K'boy, whitley and rapture. And lastly thank you to the TeamFortress community and the people that show interest in this game to get it where it is today and its not a problem thanks for the interview and your time. But please remind me not to do another interview because I am so bad at them haha... cheers all

..........Tune in next week for number five in the series!

I'm looking forward to tonight's games with quite a degree of interest. I'll be brutally honest, I don't get much chance to spectate games but I'm hoping to gatecrash a few servers tonight and check out at least one match on each of of these maps as I haven't seen a great deal of play on any of them.

Starting out on the new flavour of the month map - cp_freight and moving through the now more familiar turbine and badlands before reaching a climax on our fourth map of the evening - fastlane.

The brackets and fixtures will be released later today for this event so check back and you'll see the bracket filled in. In the mean time I think there are just two slots left at this time - if you wanted either slot then please message an op in #theSGL.tf2 where we also request at least one player from each team idle for the duration of the cup to make things nice and easy to organise as the cup progresses.

Do not forget the winner of tonight's cup will also recieve a carton (thats twelve packs of ten) of Blue Energy sugar free performance tabs from our event sponsor Fucapo. Each of these packs has the same revitalising properties as up to five cans of your average energy drink and will keep you focussed well into the early hours....
